The Big Thicket National Forest is one of the best rated hot spots for birders in the Nation. Selected as a “Globally Important Bird Area” by the American Bird Conservancy,” birders have seen some of the most rare birds available in North America right here in the Big Thicket. The entrance to several hiking trails are located right here at Hickory Hill. From prairie chickens and bald eagles to the Purple Martin and the Swallow-tailed Kite, birders can spot some of their best finds at Hickory Hill.

Bird Watcher Betsy Harwood of Round Top, Texas said the key to spotting the most rare finds is knowing the bird songs and calls. “In the wooded areas, if you know the song, you will eventually find the bird. Some of the birds [we spotted], we only heard. Many more birds could be seen with more time to drive to other areas.” Harwood spotted the following species:
